My Heart Still Beats by Meggan Jacobsen

You gave me the world
then you took it away
yet...
my heart still beats.

You asked me to dance
then the music stopped playing
yet...
my heart still beats.

You met me—naïve
and left me—cynical
yet...
my heart still beats.

My world was sunshine
and now it’s always gray
yet...
my heart still beats.

With you I felt wanted
now I am lonely
not special
but empty
my heart is in mourning
yet...it still beats.

It’s amazing!
The resilience!
Steadfast statuesque rock
hard as stone
all alone
yet...
still beating.

What this life puts it through
and what you did, too
it’s a wonder it still works at all

and sometimes I think
the strain is too much
my heart is so tired
 of yearning to be touched!

The only relief is tears
and a friend
but even still
my heart cannot mend.

Oh no, not until
you bring me back
the piece you have taken
the love that I lack.

The joy and the will
my soul and my hope
all dangle
precariously
from the thread that you broke.

I know I will live
even if you don’t come
but our love could have been epic!
Rivaled by none!

I don't know how it does it
I used to wish it would stop
But I guess I am glad
that my heart still beats....
