Why is a Lion King of the Jungle? by Yvonne White

Once upon a time, there lived an old giraffe called Eze, meaning King, who was the king of the jungle. Eze was a good, kind and generous king who treated other animals like his own family. One day, Chika (God’s strength), a fortune-teller zebra, told Eze he had only one month to live. Eze was shocked to hear this and wondered who would rule the kingdom when he had passed away.
Eze thought about a plan and finally got one. He gathered all the animals and told them that he was dying and wanted to know how they were going to behave at his funeral. An elephant said he would make the time fly by telling the animals to mourn for two minutes and leave so that he would be the next king because of his size. A fox said he would deceive the other animals by telling them he would be the next king since he was a cunning animal. The animals kept on boasting about how they were going to be the next king instead of the funeral. Eze figured that these animals do not care much about him but themselves.
The lion Dinka (hunter), who had been quiet, stepped forward, saying, “Great king, at your funeral, I will be sad and mourn because you have been a great leader who has helped us during difficult times.” He continued, “I will also celebrate life after death because once something dies, another one is reborn as part of the life cycle.”
Eze was touched by Dinka’s words and cried out, “Hail your new king of the jungle. Dinka has shown us the real meaning of life. Let it be known that from now on, only the lions must be kings of the jungles!” The other lions cheered that one of their group was chosen to be king, while the rest of the animals were confused and upset, for they wanted to rule the jungle for a long time. However, there was nothing they could do about it.
One month later, Eze, the good king giraffe, died and Dinka was crowned king of the jungle.
This is why, apart from man, lions have remained kings of the jungles.
