Room 103: A Poem about Prefixes by Meggan Jacobsen

My friend’s always around and her name’s Peri.                               peri =around
But one day she morphed into a yellow canary.                                 morph= shape
She changed her shape, and flew away
To escape the loquacious sub that day.                                               loqu= talk

Yes, these are my friends
From room 103,
I love them a lot                                                                                  phil =love
Even girl-crazy Philly.

He’s ridiculous because                                                                      rid= laughter
He never stops laughing;
And how many times did we
Have to stop Cata from napping?                                                       cata =down (get it? napping?)

“Enough is enough!” said the teacher one day,                                  sat= enough
“I’m not satisfied; for this, I need more pay.”
She panned the room, looking all around.                                          pan = all
Until Neo, the new kid, she found.                                                    neo = new

Under her breath she said something she tried to hide,
Man! You kids might make me commit homicide!”                           hom= man
The only good student, Eunice, moved to Maine                               eu = good
“If she’d only come back, then I’d be sane.”

For show and tell, my other friend Ali,                                              ali= other
Brought his faithful dog Fido                                                             fid= faith
And his parrot named Poly,                                                                poly= many
Who spoke many words and was rather jolly.

The evil teacher shouted “Let’s have a pop quiz!”
All the kids groaned, especially Liz.
They pleaded and said, “Until next week, let’s wait!”                       plac= please
The teacher gave in, though unhappy to placate.

Yes, this is my room
We are a close-knit family.                                                                 clud= close
None are excluded,
From this peaceful catastrophe.                                                          pac= peace

So this is the story of how the teacher from room 103,
Became a believer in adolescent misanthropy.                                   anthrop= man

  1. You're very clever, Meggan. This poem really made me smile. Etymology rocks!
